About Shelfbee

The grocery app that respects your time.

Shelfbee is a Canadian price-comparison tool built for the Greater Toronto Area. We rank stops by what the trip actually costs you — shelf price, gas, and time — so you stop chasing $0.50 savings 25 km away.

The wedge

Price isn’t the only cost of a grocery trip.

Every other comparison app answers “what’s cheapest on the shelf?” Shelfbee answers the question that actually matters when you’re deciding where to drive: which one or two stops minimise my total real cost — price, gas, and time combined.

A typical example

Same product. One store nearby, one a 12-minute drive further out with a slightly lower shelf price. Real cost rolls both in.

Where we fit

Not a flyer browser. Not a delivery app.

Other tools answer different questions. Shelfbee answers the one nobody else does: given my postal code and what I need this week, which one or two stops minimise my total real cost?

Flipp"What's in flyers this week?"
Instacart"What can I get delivered?"
Retailer apps"What's on at MY store?"

Who we built it for

The tired parent at 6pm.

Our primary user is on a phone in the kitchen, deciding where to shop in the next hour. They have ten seconds of attention before something interrupts them. They want one clear answer — not a dashboard, not a tutorial, not a profile to build.

Every design decision starts there. Postal code is the only required input. Results render progressively. Sign-up is optional — the core utility works minute one.

Newcomers

Just moved to the GTA and don't know which stores are cheap for what.

Students

Watching every dollar; balancing TTC trips against the savings.

Big households

Five mouths to feed; need bulk-friendly defaults.

Category trust

FreshCo for produce, Costco for baby — preferences without filters.

What we cover

Greater Toronto Area, refreshed weekly.

Geography

Greater Toronto Area. Other Canadian cities once GTA is rock-solid.

Categories

Grocery, pharmacy, baby, household. Not electronics.

Retailers

No Frills, Walmart, Food Basics, Shoppers, Costco, Real Canadian Superstore, plus the Flipp flyer network.

Refresh cadence

Friday mornings. Every result shows its own last-verified timestamp.

Our trust pact

We never claim more than we know.

Freshness, on every row

Each offer carries a green / amber / orange freshness pill. Prices more than a week old are flagged before you trust the number.

Report what's wrong

Disagree with what you saw at the shelf? One-click report sends us the correction. Real users are our QA.

No pay-to-rank

Some retailer links earn affiliate commission. They never affect the ranking — real-cost sort always wins.

From the founder

I built Shelfbee because every grocery app I tried sent me on trips that cost more than they saved. Flipp showed me a deal 22 minutes away. Retailer apps trapped me at one chain. Instacart sold me delivery I didn’t want.

The math is the product. The bee mascot is just to remind me not to take myself too seriously.
